Extra information:

Marie Barbieri has been country, city, village, national park, desert, island, mountain and coral reef-hopping for over 20 years, during which time she sauntered her itchy-footed passion into a successful freelance career. With over 200 published travel articles under her belt, Marie writes for inflight magazines, newsstand travel and health publications and award-winning websites. She left her native UK seven years ago for the otherworldly landscapes of Australia, where she now, as an Australian citizen, bases her writing and photography business. She continues to hemisphere-hop, writing for UK, European, USA and Australasian publications.

Marie is a member of the AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY OF TRAVEL WRITERS and was a finalist at the 2014 ASTW TRAVEL JOURNALISM AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE. She was also a finalist at the SA MEDIA AWARDS (2014 and 2013).

Marie has contributed to a diverse range of titles. Australasian clients include: Luxury TravelHolidays for Couples; Slow Magazine; Style Tropical North QueenslandGreat Walks; Bicycling AustraliaLet's TravelAsian Geographic Passport; and Stamford Life (Stamford Hotels' guest magazine). UK titles include: Australia & New ZealandDestination, Weddings & Honeymoons Abroad; Italia!Wild Travel and Wanderlust (SA Supplement). Marie's work has also appeared in inflight magazines, such as: Going PlacesIslands; JetstarBaltic Outlook and Yeahbaby, as well as the websites: World Travel Guide and The Dallas Morning News.

Marie spent several years living, working and travelling in Australia before becoming naturalised. She has an in-depth knowledge of Sydney, where she lived before settling in Adelaide.

Recent travels have had Marie drinking kava with the locals in Fiji's Yasawa Islands, healing at a Sri Lankan Ayurveda retreat, swimming with manta rays on Lady Elliot Island, stalking humpbacks off Fraser Island, on a four-day walk across Tasmania's Maria Island and swimming with sea lions and dolphins in the Eyre Peninsula. She explored Canada's Vancouver, Banff and Calgary, and the unique Echo Valley Ranch & Spa, before boarding the sensational Rocky Mountaineer train. Before that, she returned to Europe to enjoy Dorset's charming and historic townships, and to complete a photo-shoot of Santorini's excavated ancient cities and volcanic islets.

Travels before that had Marie motu-hopping in the Polynesian splendour of the Cook Islands, latticing Australia's sunburnt terrain on the legendary Ghan and Indian Pacific trains, camel-riding near Alice Springs, wildlife-spotting in Kangaroo Island, cycling the Gold Coast, hiking the Flinders Ranges, flying over Lake Eyre, burning adrenaline on Hamilton Island, exploring the isolated wilderness of Tasmania's Bay of Fires region, wining and dining in the Barossa and Clare Valleys, getting nose-to-bottlenose with the marine life of Western Australia's Ningaloo Reef and Queensland's Heron Island, and traversing the contrasting landscapes of New Zealand's Bay of Islands and Coromandel regions.

Upcoming commissioned assignments will have Marie getting red and dusty in the Kimberley, and sweaty and breathy on a guided multi-day walk of the Great Ocean Road.

Marie has also explored: the east and west coasts of America (particularly San Francisco); the Caribbean islands of Anguilla, Barbados and Aruba; the Greek islands of Amorgos, Koufonissi, Mykonos, Crete and Paxos; the Italian regions of Parma, Piacenza, Pavia, Lake Garda and Capri; France's Gorges du Verdon, and the Azorean island of Sao Miguel.

Marie has extensive photography archives (samples can be viewed in the PHOTO GALLERY of her website) and can provide professional, high-resolution digital images. She is available to discuss feature or photography assignments, including words/pictures packages on any of the above, and of course, on new destinations/subjects.

Marie enjoys assisting and promoting nature conservation, long-distance, theme-based rail travel, and is an avid bushwalker and cyclist often commissioned for outdoor and nature-based activity features.

Marie is also a fully qualified complementary therapist. Alongside her freelance writing business, she ran her own mobile therapy business in the UK for six years prior to her move to Australia, practising: Swedish body massage, aromatherapy massage, reflexology, thermal auricular therapy (Hopi ear candles), Indian head massage, holistic facial massage and nutritional therapy.

Health publications Marie’s work has featured in include: Australian Yoga Journal; Australian Natural Health; Nature & HealthFitness FirstYoga Magazine (UK); and Massage Magazine (USA). She was also a guest complementary health columnist for Bicycling Australia.
